Q&A

How long have you been in operation?

Merrimu was founded in 1973 – so we’ve been supporting people with a disability for about 40 years.

Where are you located?

Merrimu has locally based services in Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Ballarat. A new service is due to open in Werribee in early 2015, followed by services in Sunbury. We look forward to the opportunity to serve these communities in the near future.

You can view our locations and contact us here .

What is your accreditation status?

Merrimu is accredited with the Victorian Government Quality Framework for Disability Services. In addition, we are currently undertaking further accreditation with Amaze (formerly Autism Victoria).

How are your services funded?

Most people receive funding from the Department of Human Services (DHS), or from other government or funding sources. Some people may also choose to pay for the services themselves.

If you do not have funding, Merrimu can help you navigate the system and access funding during the planning process.

When do your services run?

Our group-based activities run from the middle of January through to late December, with two term breaks throughout the year. Our Enhancing Independence service runs 24/7. Other services operate out of hours and all year round – including SmartRun, services in the wider community, and planning, facilitation and mentoring.

What’s involved in getting started with Merrimu?

Our Services Manager will set up a meeting with you, your support people and our Facilitation Coordinator to talk to you about what you would like to achieve. Through planning, facilitation and mentoring, we’ll ensure you have choice about the things you need to reach your goals. We’ll work with you to create a unique plan that’s just for you, with your choice of opportunities and experiences. If you do not have funding, Merrimu can also help you navigate the system and access funding at this stage.

You can then begin with Merrimu whenever it suits you. We do not have a waiting list, and we will stay in touch with you until you feel you are ready to start.

What does ‘planning’ mean?

Planning involves meeting with you, your support people and our Facilitation Manager to talk to you about what you would like to achieve. We work with you to create a unique plan that’s just for you, with your choice of opportunities and experiences. Find out more here.

What if I want to change what I’m doing?

At Merrimu, we like to keep things flexible. If you change your mind about your plan, that’s no problem. We provide ongoing mentoring to make sure your unique plan is helping you meet your goals – so you can modify your plan at any time to suit you.

Simply let any staff member (Instructor, Coach, Mentor, Facilitation Manager, CEO) at Merrimu know you’d like a change, and we will work with you to do whatever is required – whether it’s a minor activity alteration or a full review of your plan.

Do you provide transport?

Yes. Our SmartRun transport service is available to all the people that we support. By using our door-to-door transport service, people can access all services facilitated through Merrimu.
